Meet The Owners
Jane Porterfield founded Educational Playcare in 1986. She began with a single building in Avon, CT and since 2001, she and her husband, Gerry Pastor, have grown their company to its present state.
Jane earned her BA in Education from LaSalle University and her MA in Early Childhood Education from St. Joseph’s College. She holds active memberships in several professional organizations, including The Hartford Association for the Education of Young Children, (HAEYC) The National Association for the Education of Young Children, (NAEYC), The National Association of Childcare Professionals and The Hartford Area Childcare Collaborative.
For many years, Jane also served as a validator for The NAEYC. As such, she visited many other childcare centers in regard to their applications for accreditation. Jane has also been elected to serve on the Board of Directors of The National Childcare Association (NCCA.)
Gerry Pastor received his BA in psychology from Penn State. He is a Casualty Actuary (FCAS) and prior to joining Jane in 2001, spent 25 years in the insurance industry in various management capacities. Gerry is also President and Founder of the CT Child Care Association, representing over 300 licensed programs. Both he and Jane work with policy makers and regulators throughout the year to improve the quality of Childcare in CT.
Jane and Gerry have four children, all of whom have long since “graduated” from Educational Playcare. Today, their grandchildren (pictured) attend their centers. They live in West Simsbury, Connecticut.
“From the very beginning, our best strategy has been honesty,” says Gerry. “Years ago, we developed mission statements which outline our promises to the children we provide care to, their families, and our staff. Unlike other companies, we take these statements very seriously. They have become the backbone of our business. One significant reason why Educational Playcare is different is because Jane and I are passionately involved with every aspect of our schools every single day.”
