OUR PROGRAMS - one year old (parrots)

ParrotsWe have bird names for each of our groups of children. Our one year olds are called parrots, for good reason. Frequently part of the process of emerging language is repeating what is heard. What better name for our one year olds than Parrots!

In many ways our one year old program is a continuation of the same goals that exist for our infants. Goals for infants and toddlers (pdf) are universal for all of our babies.

  • Our Parrot curriculum (pdf) is a little more structured, providing weekly themes and activities designed to stimulate cognitive, language, motor and social skills.
  • The physical environment is a little more varied and challenging to augment the growing physical capabilities and skills of one year olds as they transition from crawling to walking, from holding and pulling to climbing and pushing and throwing.
  • The range of "baby signs" that are used by both our teachers as well as the children begins to increase dramatically. Even before their verbal language develops, our one year olds can begin to communicate their wants and needs.
  • Reading, singing and music never stop ... and,
  • The importance of providing warm, loving and nurturing care and an environment never changes.
  • Family communication continues. A daily progress report, "Parrotgram" (pdf), is sent home daily detailing not only the basics (naps, diapering, meals), but the full range of the child's day within the categories of art and sensory activities, circle time and motor skills.
  • As with out infants, our one year olds maintain their own schedules. Diapering occurs when a child is in need, and sleeping occurs when the child is tired. However, as children develop during their second year of life, they begin to fall into more structured routines and a flexible schedule can emerge. The sample Parrot schedule (pdf) provides a good sense of the types of activities that our one year olds will experience every day.
