Many families take advantage of winter to get out of the cold and take a vacation to visit somewhere warmer. Unfortunately, for some families, taking a vacation, especially around or after the holidays just isn’t in the budget. Some families may decide to plan a fun family staycation, or would like to get together with other friends and families to host play dates for their children.
Play dates are a great way for children to spend time with their friends or have the opportunity to socialize and make new friends. During the cold weather months, it is especially helpful for families, so their children can still take advantage of the benefits of play and can burn off a bit of energy or fight off winter boredom! And did we mention how much fun they can be for adults, too? Play dates with other families are a great opportunity to get out of the house or host a get together and enjoy some time with other adults. Hosting group playdates can also be beneficial to have new neighbors who have children get to know one another.
Looking to plan a play date but not sure what to do? Here are five great play date ideas for this winter:
- Enjoy the outdoors: If the season has been mild, take advantage of the weather conditions and get outside. If there’s been a recent snow storm, host a snowman building and decorating contest and give out fun prizes. No snow on the ground? Go for a walk or hike together. Bring along your pets or use the time to play fun games such as “I Spy” or a nature treasure hunt.
- Visit a library or host a “book fair”: Visiting the library can be a great activity to find new books for your children to enjoy during their break. If you don’t have time to make it to the library, dig up their books – especially those they haven’t read in a while – and set up a “book fair” for them to attend. With your help, allow your children to pick out books that seems interesting to them to help develop their passion for reading. This is a fun way for your children to learn about new tops and rediscover topics and stories they love. Benefits to picking out their own books
- Get Creative: Let those imaginations run free! There are so many different scenarios for this fun indoor activity that you can just let the children decide for themselves what they would like to do! A fun activity could be creating a fort. Who didn’t love building a fort as a child? Pass the joy along to your children and watch how much fun they have playing in a fort they created themselves. You may even discover they find more enjoyment playing with their everyday toys just by playing with them inside their fort. This space can also be used to play games or read books together or later during family time.
